I have a 5 year old laptop that I was going to chuck so I formated the hard drive. Now I have a use for it. I reformated and partitioned the drive and started xp pro setup with an xp disk that came with another comuter I have. It freezes at the device detection stage with 33 minutes to go. I am by NO means hardware knowledgable. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I actually bought a new lap top after numerous attempts to setup the old laptop. Eventually it became clear that some devices had infact failed and were not worth replacing. Punky provided a good link and I apologize for not getting back to this question.  What I have learned is that there are a number of soulutions (including Punky's) - but results will very considerabbly depending on devices systems etc. In short - patience is a major requirements.
