Will html files created from templates have their links work in preview mode?

I have been tasked with taking our web site and associating templates I've created with the files.  I wasn't at all successful doing that directly, but have found that I can create a template from an html file and then create a new "document from template," and paste in text from the old html file into the editable areas of the new one.  Seems to work.  When I view the file in a browser in preview mode, it looks fine.  However, when I click on, say, the Home button while previewing, I get an error.  I am not taken to the Home page, although it resides in the same directory.  Question is, should this link work in preview mode?  Or will it only work once we have the site up and running?  And if it should work in preview mode and doesn't, does anyone have any idea why not?  TIA
