Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service will not start

My Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine Service will not start.

I went through the entire process of uninstalling IIS and reinstalling IIS while including all the updates and hotfixes.  I then reinstalled Exchange will all the updates as well, but still can't get the RESVC to start.

I tried Disaster Recovery, but my exchange server backups will not restore.

The error I get when trying to start Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine is:  Could Not Start the Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine on local computer.  Error 3:  The system cannot find the path specified.

My event log has the error:  Event ID:  116 - Service:  RESVC - The description for Event ID ( 116 ) in Source ( RESVC ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: /LM/RESVC/.

Since I tried all the reinstalls and disaster recovery I believe the problem is with my registry or something.

just read the EE thread i posted to above and it states that the fix he implemented did not work.   I also re-read your original post and you've already tried reinstalling Exchange.  Pardon my stupidity!

Thanks for the help.  I tried those solutions already and neither worked out for me.  I've already done the uninstall/installs a couple of times and it hasn't worked.
this KB article mentions something similar: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841576

Yea.  I tried reinstall and everything.  All those articles are good, but without having a backup I can't get it to work.  That's why I think it's a registry or dll problem
MOst articles are suggesting that even though you removed IIS and Exchange if the metabase.bin file is not removed completely then this issue can persist after a reinstall.

The link above provides useful info on repairing the IIS metabase.  Did you ensure that metabase.bin was completely removed after you uninstalled IIS?

Yea.  I did disaster recovery again and I'm installing exchange 2003 SP 2 right now to see if that will work, even though I've done it a couple tof times.  If not, I'll try the whole IIS/Exchange process again.

I forgot to mention, and it happened again that when I do the Exchange /reinstall it lists under Server Applications Installation:

Exchange Server
Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Server Configuration

After the pre-installation it puts an X next to Exchange Server but checkmarks next to the other two.

During the installation process it says:  The exchange server had previously been updated by a service pack.  Reinstall the Microsoft Exchange Server pack.  It then puts an X next to Exchange Server again, but checkmarks next to the other two.

Ok after the reinstall it still won't work.  Can anyone please help??  I know it has to be a problem with the registry or DLL's.
Just to confirm you did the reinstall of Exchange with the /disasterrecovery switch?  I cant find much else on this topic, people seem to resolve this issue by uninstalling IIS, making sure metabase.bin has been removed and re-install IIS then run the exchange setup with the /disasterrecovery switch and selecting disaster recovery for each component of the exchnge install.

If you've done this then i'm running out of ideas unfortunately.

I'm finishing up a retry of the uninstall IIS, reboot, install IIS, reboot, install updates, reboot, reinstall Exchange, reboot, install updates and I'll let you know.

Thanks again.  This is ridiculous that I can't get it to work.
i take it you got this working?
I have the same problem
did you get it to work?
