computer boots but does not load personal settings

Hi
I am using a computer running XP Pro Service Pack 2 which has suddenly developed a problem in that the computer boots but does not load personal settings. It just hangs and nothing else happens. All suggestions gratefully received. If I can provide any more information please ask. Thanks.

Before you perform a repair install, you could try disabling startup programs.
If you can boot into safe-mode, type "msconfig" in the run box (without quotes). Click on the startup tab and then click on "Disable all". Click on the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box, then click on "Disable all".
It will ask to reboot. Can you now boot to the desktop?  If so, go back into msconfig and re-enable startups and services individually until you find the culprit...

Good luck!

Hi all
Apologies for delay in replying to your posts. andyms56 was quite right in that last known good configuration in safe-mode did the trick. As simple as that. I should have known better myself but I panicked when nothing seemed to be happening. I shall award the points to Andy but thanks to you all for your help.
