How to compare table values to a list (in mySql)?

I'm working in PHP with a mySql database and have the following sort of challenge. I have a table with a unique 'ID' field. I want to find which records are missing, either in all iterated numbers from the lowest to highest in the table, or in a range I specify (e.g. 1-100).

How can this be done?
Thank you!
