How would I intercept a mouse click over a third party app?

Hi everyone.

Have been a member here for two years, and this is my first ever question, so hoping you can help me out a little.

Would it be possible to intercept a mouseclick over a third party app so that the third party app can't act on it?

To give you a *purely hypothetical* example, is it possible to have some kind of overlay (for lack of a better word) over a window -- let's say the MSN messenger chat window...that detects mouse clicks over the "send" button, and intercepts them so that they have no effect?

Once again, that is a totally bogus example however I am reluctant to share the exact details of where such a technique would be used, except for saying that it will be for a commercial purpose.

I have seen "overlays" in other applications, they are commonly called Head Up Displays, and display data from an external source over a third party application window.

So to summarise, what I am hoping for is some guidance, direction, or resources that will allow me to determine whether or not this is possible, and if so, how I would get started.

It's important to note that windows is the OS I'd be using (both XP and Vista), and that the intercept should only occur within certain, constant and well defined boundaries on the application window.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

Eric
