Failover for ASP.NET web application

Dear experts,

I'm developing an ASP.NET web-app that needs to have active-active failover / load balancing capability. I imagine my web servers need to be able to share sessions variable, etc. What kind of hardware / software do I need to have? Where to start? Any pointers / articles are welcome.

Also, would it make a difference if I plan to add-on AJAX to my web-app?
