asked on

server rebooted in the middle of day

our server froze then rebooted in the middle of the day.  I dont see anything in the logs that would sugest why?  where else should I look?

I had an issue where there was a bad USB hard drive plugged into the server for backup.  When the server would try and access the drive it would freeze.  I would try removing anything that is plugged into the server.  Other thing to check is memory, you can find some memory utilities on the internet, but you would have to take the server down to run those.

probably power supply or motherboard, could be hwrdware related.
also make sure you are auditing system events.

one of our other techs ran defrag on it, and that s seems to have caused it.  While it was defraging it froze then rebooted.
however it keept bebooting every 40 min or so.  I ran sckdsk /r /f on reboot and believe it has corrected itself.  It was getting a blue screen with a Kernel instack error.
