Setting Up a Network

I have 2 computers using Windows XP Pro, both of which belong to the workgroup "Workgroup".  I want to be able to share files securely on both computers.

On computer1, I can see the 2 computers listed under Workgroup, but if I try to access computer2 I get an error:

Workgroup
\\computer2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

On computer2, I cannot view the workgroup.  I get an error:

My Network Place:
Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

Make sure that both machines are in the Same Workgroup and that both have File and Printer Sharing Enabled in the firewall settings

right click the folder that you want to share.
choose sharing and security tab
choose radio button share this folder...and give it a unique name like
"computerName Pictures", or "computerName Document"...etc...You can share the who C: if you want, but just make sure you name it so that you know which computer its coming from...sometimes, since these are basically shortcut, the computer, if you go to a share and its just named C:  it will take you to your local C: instead of the other computer....
so in that case, use naming convention:  ComputerName C:.  Make sure you have read and write permissions also if you want to change files from  a different computer...anway, have fun...and good luck.

I set up a new folder on the desktop of Computer2 and when I go to properties under the Sharing tab, I cann't share the folder.  It says: to share this folder with other users of this comptuer, drag it to the Shared Document folder.

As a security feature, Windows has disabled remote access to this computer. However you can enable remote access and safely share files buy running the Network Setup Wizard.

I even created a new folder in the Shared Document folder on computer2, but I still cannot see computer2 under workgroup on computer1.

ok...try typing the address explicitly in the window's explorer...ie if computer name is avatar

type:

\\Avatar and see if folders show

it may be that someone has turned off something in your MSCONFIG file (which speeds up the computer) but it doesn't allow you to see network places).

Yes I am the admin on both computers.  If I go to: \\Avatar

In User name, It is greyed out and allows me to connect as Avatar\Guest but I need to connect as Administrator.  How do I do this?

on the other machine that you are loggin on, check the permissions button under the sharing tab and see if you're only allowing guest or everyone...that's also where you would give yourself read write privileges...

On computer2, which folder should I check for permissions?

oops...to be clearer...on the pseudonym Avatar, check the folder that is sharing (i think you're using the default one Shared Folder).  under sharing, check the permissions.

Under sharing there is no permissions button.   It says: to share this folder with other users of this comptuer, drag it to the Shared Document folder ... but it won't let me put the folder into the Shared Document folder.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users.
