Add raid1 drives

We have an HP ML150 with a single drive that contains the OS (server 2003) and a shared folder. I purchased 2 new hard drives and want to add them to this system in raid1. They will be used as a single shared drive for the company, leaving the OS on the original drive. Also the server shows under device manager: Adaptec embedded sata hostraid controller. It has been a while since I've done this. I would like someone to give me a quick cheat sheet expalining the best way to add these drives and copy over the shared data (while saving the permissions?).

first of all, do a backup before you do anything else.

then you need to make sure if your RAID controller can actually support hardware RAID, not software RAID.

After that,
1. Use Acronis to back up your hard drive
2. take out the old drive
3. put 2 news and set up RAID 1
4. restore backup via Acronis universal restore

Basically what PaperTiger said is correct.  Unless you have some special card, you shouldn't be able to add drives to a Raid1 array without first breaking the array.

Can I assume that the embedded card is software only? I am anly looking to mirror. Do I need to purchase a hardware raid card? Also, I have Acronis Workstation 9.1. Will it image the server correctly?

What do you mean when you ask "is the embedded card software only"

You do not need to purchase an add on card if your motherboard contains a RAID controller.  Now, with that being said, you can buy much better 3rd party cards than the one that's on your motherboard.  Promise and Adaptec come to mind first.

Do you realize that the Acronis software is $800 for a server? I just wanted to add a few drives to an existing system.
Also tgtcat69, I made it clear that it is a single drive. What "array" would I be breaking?

Storage

Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. In addition to local storage devices like CD and DVD readers, hard drives and flash drives, solid state drives can hold enormous amounts of data in a very small device. Cloud services and other new forms of remote storage also add to the capacity of devices and their ability to access more data without building additional data storage into a device.
