Need to move install of Symantec Antivirus ver. 10 to a new server. Can you help please?

I need to move an existing server install of Symantec Anti-Virus ver. 10 from one server to another.  The office mgr. doesn't think they have any disks and I cannot find the install file on the old server.  Also I'm wondering if I need to reconfigure the clients once the installation is moved.  Thanks so much for the help.

"Have you ever wondered why you can't simply move an application from, say, one disk drive to another? The answer is simple; Because moving applications is risky and it doesn't always work.

Acronis recommends using the Windows Move command only to move data associated with applications (documents, spreadsheets, images, etc.) If you create a new partition on your disk or install an additional drive, Acronis recommends reinstalling the applications in the new partitions and uninstalling them from the old partitions.

While data can be moved from one partition to another quite easily, moving an application is another matter entirely. Moving an application can do anything from knocking out network access to the program to corrupting the program itself or to causing other applications to fail.

The problem with moving applications is that Windows applications depend on Registry entries and often files that could be scattered in unpredictable locations. Although the Windows Move command tries to keep everything straight, information doesn't always get updated when an application is moved. To further complicate matters, some programs share pieces, such as Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs), with other applications. When those DLLs are moved, the other programs that use them may not be able to find them.

There isn't an absolute prohibition on moving applications. You can successfully move applications in Windows. Sometimes you can move them with third-party application utilities. But sometimes you can't move them at all.

There are programs that will move applications to new partitions, but they are limited and somewhat chancy. The maker of one of the more popular such programs specifically recommends against trying to move large, complex applications like Microsoft Office because of the number of dependencies. And moving the operating system from one partition to another flat does not work.

What does work is to reinstall the programs in the new partition. This is usually simple and fairly fast. The installer takes care of setting everything up properly so you avoid the problems of moving programs.

Just make sure you have the program's serial numbers available before you start moving and reinstalling applications."

As sysexpert has told you, you can download it from their website... and regarding the configuration you should modify the new server to match exactly the old one.. for the clients to recognize it as the old server..!

good luck

Won't the clients look to the old server name and folder when they are getting the antivirus license infomation?
Yes sure they will, and i thought you are going to configure these the same as the old server on the new one..!

the office staff found the install disks for the server antivirus.  I didn't have to download anything, time saved there.  I am still confused about how to reconfigure the clients to look to a new parent server.  I looked at one of the existing client installations and don't see any option to point to a new parent server.  I did one new client install from the new server to make sure the client install went okay and it did.  Just wondering how to configure the existing clients.  Thanks again for the help.

Thank you, I looked quite a while at Symantec's website, but did not find the link you gave about moving the clients to the new server.  Maybe you have a better search engine or browser than me!
