Why does the computer think this printer is connected with IEEE1284?

I have an HP LJ P3005X here.  It's connected to a machine with a USB cable, but it's moving really slow.  I checked out the port and it says it's connected via IEEE 1284 parallel cable.  Now, I can visually verify that a USB cable goes from the back of the printer, down behind the desk, across the floor, and up into a USB plug on the back of the computer.  If I uninstall the printer, Windows recognizes it as IEEE 1284 and not USB when I reconnect the USB cable.

Any ideas on this one?

What is your OS?  If applicable what edition?

How did you install the printer or add it to your computer?  HP is picky and likes their own USB port.  Use the CD that came with the printer to install it.  First delete the old printer and you will probably need to disconnect the printer first.  Then connect it to the computer when prompted.

If you have a question then let me know.

Hey, it's a Windows XP Pro machine.  I've removed and reinstalled the printer several times using both the included CD and drivers downloaded from HP.com.  The odd thing is that this printer worked perfectly on the user's old machine.  Only on her new machine are we getting this behavior.

Ah, never mind!  I spent a while longer with it this morning.  One time I plugged it in, Windows recognized it as a USB printer, but it changed it to IEEE 1284 when I applied the drivers.

So, the solution was simple after this.  I noticed a spare network cable laying under her desk, so I crawled under there, connected it to the printer, gave the printer some network information, and added it as a new printer port.  Now it prints really fast, my coworker is happy, and I am happy.

:)  Good.  I thought I saw it had an ethernet port.  That would make a good option for printing.  One suggestion to make it so there aren't future issues.  Assign the printer a static IP, either turning off DHCP and doing it on the printer or with "reserve" on the router/DHCP server/etc.  Of course make sure it won't be one that would interfere with another device.  Doing this will make sure the computer will always know the printer's IP.

If you have a question about this or options to close this then let me know.

Printers and Scanners
Printers and Scanners

A printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human readable representation of graphics or text on paper or similar physical media. Traditional printers are being used more for special purposes, like printing photographs or artwork, and are no longer a must-have peripheral; 3D printing has become an area of intense interest, allowing the creation of physical objects. An image scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image. Hand-held scanners, where the device is moved by hand, have evolved from text scanning "wands" to 3D scanners used for industrial design, reverse engineering, test and measurement, orthotics, gaming and other applications.
