ok for some reason I can't get Safari to open on my Mac G4 so I tried installing Firefox 3 and the same issue happened
where the icon in the dock bounces like it is opening but then nothing happens
could someone help me diagnose what the issue is with this older G4 mac and web browsers
when I click on other apps they open fine it seems like this issue is only with safari and Firefox
hmm ok tried the majority of those and it didn't really help
when we created a new user and clicked on the app Firefox shows in the dock bounces a few times and then disappears

we don't keep anything important on the computer
it just sits in our conference room
is there a easy way to format it without the original discs? or a way to request the original discs?
Open Disk Utility (in \Applications\Utilities ) and run Verify Disk. If it shows no errors, the disk was repaired (or was okay to begin with). If it still shows errors, you have a problem.
While you have disk utility open, you should also run "repair permissions".

I wasn't able to click on verify disk or repair disk it was grayed out
but I was able to repair permissions
but it still didn't fix it

Repair Disk will be greyed out unless you boot from a system CD, but Verify Disk should work.
Also, try opening the Library folder at the root of the hard drive and dragging the folder "internet plugins" out to the desktop.

I still can't get Verify disk to ungrey
I moved the internet plugins folder to the desktop but still no change

When in Disk Utility, make sure you have the volume you are trying to verify highlighted in the left hand pane, not the disk that contains the volume. That should ungrey "verify disk".
on the left I have two options
74 GB HD
and then under that it has Macintosh HD
when I highlight either it stays greyed out
is there suppose to be a different option to click on?

Should not be greyed out if you have highlighted Macintosh HD. That is baffling.
Check to see if " Journaling" is enabled on the drive. Open Disk Utility. In the menu click File/Enable Journaling.
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
Then see if you can run Verify Disk

Journaling was already enabled when I went to file it just gave the option to disable journaling
so I rebooted holding down shift it did a safe boot I then opened up Disk Utility and clicked on Macintosh HD but Verify Disk was still greyed out
