Display laptop screen on external monitor

I'm having a weird issue.  I just gave a user a new laptop (inspiron 680). I set it up, plugged it into a docking station.  the docking station has an external monitor which should be displaying the same as what is on the laptop screen.  This was all setup and functioning correctly about an hour ago.  Well needless to say the user decided to change some resolution settings and now all I can do is extend the desktop to the external monitor.  When I uncheck "extend to desktop" for display 2 the monitor display turns off and the power button blinks amber like it isn't getting video.  The external monitor was set to 1280X1024 and working fine.  Now if I even drop the resolution it doesn't work.  Am I missing something here?

The user is out of the office for a little while so it might be a bit before I can check that.  I did toggle the video when I had it docked to see if that would work and it didn't seem to fix the issue but I'll double check when he gets back.
