On the very first line of the output for each interface when you issue the &quot;show interface&quot; command, you will see the type of the interface.<br />

For example, if you see &quot;interface Fastethernet 0/0&quot;, you've got a 10/100mbps interface. If however you see &quot;interface Ethernet 0/0&quot;, you've got a 10mbps interface.<br />

On LAN interfaces, the bandwidth is preset to the speed of the interface. <br />

Then i am going to have to get a 10/100 interface for the 3640.<br />

I am attaching a screenshot of the speed command. This router is not running a live config since i am testing the features of the IOS so the interfaces are not configured.<br />

One more question, what are these 10 mbps interfaces good for nowadays? An ethernet interface will be connected to a switch that will most likely operate at 100 mbps. The router will the slow everything down. I dont see the point.<br />

There's no speed command on an ethernet interface because 10mbps is the only speed it can run at.<br />

As for what an ethernet interface is good for, what if the only other interfaces on the router are serial interfaces that connect to T1 lines, then there's no need for the only LAN interface to operate any faster than 10mbps.<br />

Let me get this straight....so if i connect my 2950 switch which operates ar 100 mbps will it not create a bottleneck? I have the router operating at 10mbps passing data to the switch at that rate....???

What I said was that the 10mbps link isn't the bottleneck. The T1 line is. Since all internet bound traffic is limited to a 1.5mbps link, the 10mbps ethernet link is NOT the bottleneck. <br />

The reason the confusion is that my office is planning to go to a new contract where we can download 15.0mbps<br />
