Creating Datawarehouses is a big job and thats even before you start working on the ETL.<br />
<br />
Getting specific about terminology here:<br />
<br />
-A Datawarehouse has many source systems and subject areas. They are all mixed in as a sinlge view of the enterprise.<br />
-A Datamart is generally a split off from a datawarehouse and has just one subject area<br />
-An ODS is generally a copy of a production database along with some mappings and extra business structure which is used for reporting purposes<br />

It sounds like you are after an ODS<br />
<br />

Are you actually doing any transformations or adding value to the data.. i.e. adding extra groupings or rollups or performing data cleansing?<br />
<br />
If not then just backup and restore the database or use some kind of replication. There's non need to mess with SSIS. You only neeed SSIS if you are actually doing some kind of semi complex transformation.<br />
<br />
It is different to DTS but once you get over the learning curve its still just an ETL tool that moves and transforms data.<br />
<br />
The task of creating a reporting database and reports is more of a database developers one than application developer.<br />
<br />
I would say that if you can hand write a SQL statement with a couple of joins then thats a good indication that you can attack this. However If you are used to writing apps that access the database through abstracted classes, thats not too good a start.<br />

OK this is what I ended up doing. <br />
Since I only needed to replicate the database to generate reports I created a DTS to copy the database everynight. this allowed me to create a copy of the production db and not affect the regular production.<br />

Solved the problem by just simple scheduling a copy instead of using SSIS.<br />

I am pretty much a beginner on this area( development, more in the technical area), but I am really in need of some help. I have a client that is running a transportation program in a SQL 2005 server. Their software vendors recommended for them to use SSIS to create a Datawarehouse to run some reports from this db. I am pretty much lost and do not know where to start. I know that SQL has some wizards to create these packages, but I would like to know if someone like me could actually tackle this task or should I just try to hire a developer. I have used DTS in older versions of SQL. Could anyone guide me on where to start or maybe a tutorial. We just need to migrate the data from the production db to the report db.<br />

How to use SSIS to create a Datawarehouse SQL 2005
