Wrap the link around something, and give that something a background.<br />
For me, this is a time-tested solution!<br />

I only get the blinking when its an image<br />
colors seem to be fine<br />

I have my code just like you show above but I use an image it redownloads the image the second time and I need the image to just be cached<br />
and this only happens in ie6<br />

The colors I used was just an example. &nbsp;Do the same thing but with an image.<br />

Here's what's going on:<br />
When switching from one image to another (when hovering) there's a time gap between the two backgrounds in which there is nothing (the blinking). &nbsp;Actually, it's not &quot;nothing&quot;, it's transparent. &nbsp;If the background behind the link is white, the blink will be white; if it's blue, the blink will be blue, etc. &nbsp;Following this logic, if the background behind the link (the span's background) is the same as the link's background, you won't be able to tell see the blinking because the background is the same.<br />

As far as the &quot;caching&quot; goes, look into a CSS technique called &quot;<a href="http://css-tricks.com/css-sprites-what-they-are-why-theyre-cool-and-how-to-use-them/" rel="ugc">sprites</a>&quot;. &nbsp;It won't fix your blinking practice, but it will give you other benefits such as no need for caching and faster loading time.<br />

UGH read my original question<br />
I am using sprites<br />
I am doing it just as you stated but I still see a blinking and from the first answer post it is a confirmed bug<br />
I just need a work around for IE6<br />
I only see the blinking in Ie6 all other browsers it is fine<br />

but I am currently using image sprites to just change the background image's position which is causing a blinking in ie6
