Best Windows OS to Host VMWARE Server 1.06

Hi All,

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2800 Dual Xenon Proc. Server with 4 GB of RAM, 2 TB RAID.  I tested ESX Server 3.5  but decided for a single server it isn't worth running - and I don't know linux well enough  to support it, should something go wrong.   I have decided on going with the VMWARE 1.06 server (latest full release).   I currently have a clean virgin copy of Windows 2000 Server Advanced on the box - 32bit edition.

My question is: would upgrading to Windows Server 2000 Advanced 64 bit, Windows 2003 32 or 64 bit edition increase my performace of VMWARE?   Or am I better just staying with the Win2k Advanced 32 bit that I have on the box.   All 4GB is currently adressable as I'm running Adavanced.   My 3 Guest OS's will all be Windows 2003 32bit.

Does the HOST OS make any difference in performance and if so, which do you recommend given my situation and why?

Thanks in advance!

therockyb, why is the memory managed better under 2003 over 2000 Advanced with PAE (to see over 4GB)  ?

Also 2003 seems to take more resources to run in terms of memory over 2000, is the advantages of 2003 significant enough to overcome the larger OS?

Third, will VMWARE Server 1.06 take advantage of running the 64 bit version of the HOST OS?
All my guest OS's will be 2003 32 bit edition.   Will 64 bit on the HOST still help?  (aside from memory, as I will only be running 4-6GB of RAM) and if so, why?

Not playing devils advocate here, just would like to get a better understand of why 2003 64 bit HOST is your selection.

Thanks Again,
Yosi

Hi,

I don't have any numbers or links to support what I am saying, I was just exposing you the tests that we did internally and what the result was.

It's true that version 1.X is running 32 bits on a 64 bits OS but the overall performance of the OS will be better on 64 bits.

For the memory management of Windows 2003 over Windows 2000 I just know that the memory management was greatly improved without having any proofs.

When this subject was discussed in our last Vmware Users Group the expert from VMware was pushing hard to run it from Windows 2003 for a performance perspective.
