asked on

Cannot access some Vista folders or change permissions to allow me to do so

I have a new PC with Vista and am setting it up.  I wanted to look at some folders but was denied access. Went to change permissions but this wasn't allowed. Tried changing permissions, ownership etc. but still no luck. The error message -

An error occurred while applying security information to C:\Users\MY NAME\Application Data     Access is Denied

I used a Belkin easy transfer cable to transfer settings from my XP machine to the new one - could this be part of the problem (there are no restrictions on accessing files in the old PC)

-I have tried turning off UAC - makes no difference. I do not have the XP and Vista machines connected anymore and am simply trying to access the folder through the normal START ... Explore method.

There are other folders that are denied to me as well - all excepy one have what looks like the shortcut icon beside the name rather than the normal icon.  I've just checked and this is the case for COOKIES, LOCAL SETTINGS, NETHOOD, PRINTHOOD, SEND TO,  START MENU and DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS, and TEMPLATES.

The first message that comes up when I clik any of these is, for example:

C:\Documents and Settings is not accessible.  Access is denied

When I check my permssions, however, it shows that I DO have rights over the folder!

Sorry ..... just checked further. On some folders (eg Documents and Settings, it showed that I did NOT have permissions. I changed all the entries to 'ALLOW'   and received the follwoing erro message.

An error occurred while applying security information to:
C:\Documents and Settings
Access is denied

If I hit continue then I get:

Unable to save permission changes on Documents and Settings
Access is denied

Thanks Robsantos ..... it's a shame that Microsoft don't mention this when they say it's so easy to migrate from an XP machine to a Vista one!

Full marks to robsantos! Seems to me that this is somehting MS might tell us - they say it's so easy to migrate from an XP machine to a Vista one .... and so it is until one needs to delve into the file structure .. I think that these junctions deserve to be hidden - and i've never said that about files before.

A lesson to me is to look at alternative file locations ... the files I wanted are in AppData ... could hae saved myself many hours of frustration!

yet another reason I'm in no rush to go to Vista - what's the point of being a local admin if I get access denied?

Glad we found this... like I said, I'm learning too!

Windows Vista

Windows Vista is an operating system created by Microsoft as the successor to Windows XP. It was intended for PCs, workstations and laptops, and shares the same code base as its successor, Windows 7. New features included an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and visual style dubbed Aero, a new search component called Windows Search, redesigned networking, audio, print and display subsystems, and new multimedia tools. Vista aimed to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network, using peer-to-peer technology to simplify sharing files and media between computers and devices. Windows Vista included version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, allowing software developers to write applications without traditional Windows APIs.
