Step-by-step iPhone setup guide for Exchange 2003

Hi Experts,

OK - I'm looking for some rock solid evidence here. I've been looking all over the internets only to find so many contradicting reports of Exchange working and then not working with such settings and other settings. Let me detail our environment:

- Exchange 2003 running on Server 2003
- OWA running with a self-signed SSL certificate
- IMAP NOT configured or running on exchange server
- iPhone with self-signed SSL certificate installed

Now, for the questions:
- Will the iPhone 3G's "exchange" option work with Exchange 2003,or only 2007 (as some reports would have it)
- Does the "exchange" option in the iPhone mail setup require IMAP to be running on the Exchange server?
- What is Activesync and how does it apply? I've only used Blackberry Enterprise Server before this and have no experience with activesync in an exhcange environment. Last I heard it was a desktop app for syncing pocket pcs.
- Is it possible to setup exchange to the iphone with a self signed SSL certificate?
- Is there anything I have to do to the exchange server to make it "iphone compatible"? If OWA is running, should the iPhone work too?

Here's my problem. The iPhone adds my exchange account fine, celebrating at each step with kind words such as "verified",etc. :) (With the exception of the SSL error, "Could not verify", or something), then, when I open up the inbox - no emails are there. Empty. When I go to send, I get the error: "Cannot Send Mail. An error occurred while delivering this message")

Thanks for the assistance!
-Max

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the delay - my Spam filter has been catching EE notifications as of late. OK:

The environment is a single server - no front end or back end - no cluster, forms based authentication is enabled with SSL on the OWA site (self-signed certificate). I installed the self signed certificate onto the iphone by emailing it to my gmail account, and then installing it from the attachment. Exchange version is: 2003 SP2, but I have not yet upgraded the core Server 2003 OS to SP2 - it is still at SP1 (this is due to various reports that SP2 has broken exchange and BES a while ago). Once I get a few moments, I plan on doing a full system backup and then installing Server 2003 SP2. I heard there were problems with SSL, forms based authentication and Activesync - something to do with the virtual directories and SSL being enabled...

Thanks for your assistance!

Hi,

Just came across this link:

http://www.petri.co.il/problems_with_forms_based_authentication_and_ssl_in_activesync.htm

Does the problems it describes still apply to Exchange SP2 and the iPhone?

Thanks!

MaxwellB: That is exactly why I was asking about FBA.  Those are the instructions I followed and they worked beatufully.  I have the exact same set up as you do except for that I bought my Cert from a third party trusted CA.  It is a LOT easier with a third party trusted CA from verisign or NetSol because those are already trusted by the browsers.  If you want to do your own cert from your in-house CA, you'll have to load the Root cert first, then the SSL cert for owa.  It gets way more complicated.

I highly recommend upgrading the Server OS.  I too have BES and it did not screw anything up.  I'm running BES 4.1, Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 Single Server, FBA=on.  You just have to make sure that cdo.dll is the same version on both BES and Exchange, but I digress.
In regards to your Exchange server scenario and active-sync, the instructions you found on petri.co are correct and are the ones I followed.  Remember to start by turning FBA off, going through the instructions and then turning it back on after you're done.  It took me all of about 10 minutes.  Good luck, looks like you're on the right track.

Great! :) I'm thinking about getting a godaddy certificate just to make it easier. I try setting this up ASAP.
