Connecting text boxes in a book to get flowning text

I've recieved a book of about 100 pages written with pagemaker by another person. All the text is entered as induvidual text boxes, while actually most of it is one long text so that the text boxes should be connected.

As it is now, if you enter more text into one box, you have to move all the following ones manually... I want the text to flow automatically.

There are also pictures and there is some describing text on top of some of them. This text of course should not flow but stay on top of the pictures. Also the flowing text should not flow into the picture pages. (Most of the pictures take up one whole page.)

What would be the fastest and easiest way to fix this? The text is going to be translated so obviously the amount of text in each box will change. The basic layout with the pictures should stay though.

I also could switch to another program if that would make it easier. I'm a beginner to pagemaker myself.

evaf,

It's been a while since I used PageMaker....

Can you export the entire book to Word? If I remember right there's a way to import a Word doc and have it flow across pages.

Best,

Hi MHenry, thanks for your answer.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to export to Word.t. It's possible to export to HTML, so I tried to do that and then import to Word, but the layout got a bit messed up, especially where there was explaining text on top of the pictures, so wasn't really a feasible solution.

The thing  is, I never used Pagemaker before. The problem was sort of dumped on me... I managed to figure out that it is possible to have text flowing between boxes, but the problem here is that the text has been entered in the wrong way from the beginning.

The girl who wrote the book was just translating it from one language to another, it's not her fault, it's the person who taught her Pagemaker who did a lousy job...

And now she asked me to help her fix it. If she had asked me before she put all the text in I could have figured out the right way to do it, but now unfortunately it is all already done in the wrong way and needs to be fixed as soon as possible...

That's why I need help...

Hmmm, don't know about the pictures. You may have to go through and hand-edit them for placement.

For the HTML, launch it in your browser, then copy all the text and paste into into Notepad or some other plain text editor. That will strip out all the extraneous stuff. Then copy that and paste it into Word.

Ok I think that might work for the body text, but what about the pics?

Let's say I copy all the body text from the browser and automount it into a new pagemaker
document. That I think should take care of the flow of the body text.

But how to I put the pictures in again? Can I copy them from the old PM doc?
And how do I make sure that the body text doesn't flow into the pics?

Eva,

Not sure on the pics. LIke I said, it's been a while since I've used PM.

Do you have the originals or are these just links to photos that aren't there anymore? If you can see them in the doc, you should be ok. Try having both docs open and then drag from the old doc into the new one.

If it's not for print, you could do screen captures, if nothing else.

It is for print. I have (or can get) the originals. It's line drawings, not photos, so resolution isn't an issue.

The important thing is that I want the pics to be separate from the flow of the body text. No text should
flow into the picture pages.

So if I mount the body text first, can I then go somewhere in the middle of that text, put a new page in, put a picture there, and say, this page is not part of the flow. But the rest of the text on both sides of the pic still are part of the flow.

And also, would it be easier to import the whole tihing into indesign instead? Would it be easier to
use indesign instead of PM?

I'm not used to any of them so wouldn't matter to me which one I have to learn.

Page Layout Software

Page layout, also known as desktop publishing, is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. It generally involves organizational principles of composition to achieve specific communication objectives. With print media, elements usually consist of type (text), images (pictures), and occasionally place-holder graphics for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing. Commonly used programs include Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Corel Ventura, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher and Xara, along with more specialized programs such as TeX, LaTeX and LyX.
