OUTLOOK 2003 IMAP Client closes connection to server, users need to reconnect.
We use Apple Xserver G5 server win Mac OS X 10.5, 4GB Ram, 3x15K Rpm RAID 5 SAS HDD, for Postfix email services (IMAP), the server is located within our office LAN (Gigabit).
Our users are using Outlook 2003 and connecting to the server using IMAP account. Periodically the Outlook 2003 IMAP client would be disconnected, even though the timeout settings is maximum (10min).
Is there any solution to overcome this disconnected client problem? A registry tweak, custom written exe?
Cheers

Yes, you are right, I recall seeing Cyrus as the owner of the users IMAP folders.
Thats the IMAP server I use and I use Outlook 2003 aswell and rarely have any problems with it.
Sometimes Outlook may disconnect if the machine is old and very busy doing something like a large excell recalculation combined with a virus scan.
What is the spec of the desktop machines running outlook?
What virus scanner if any are they running?

1. There are several large shared IMAP folders for workflow purposes, all admin staff access these shared IMAP accounts. Each of these shared IMAP account has >Â 10,000 emails in several folders/sub folders.
2. The Admin staff PCs are high end - 2GB RAM, Dell Intel Duo Core, 2 LCD Display, however they run large Excel files and intensively use a IE6 finance webapps.
3. No one is the office switches off the PC so when we do server maintenance, all the Outlook clients are disconnected but they do not automatically reconnect (like Exchange). So they need to individually go to each IMAP account and click on Reconnect, or restart Outlook.
I think if there is a way for Outlook to automatically reconnect it would reduce alot of support calls.

Hi, yes we are testing Thunderbird and it seems better compared to Outlook. Only concernis the calendering features of Outlook which users are using. before seriously considering thunderbird, we thought to check if there are tweaks, patch which can make Outlook perform better in auto reconnecting.

There is a thunderbird calendar plugin called Lightning

You will be using a different package to provide the IMAP storage. Probably CyrusIMAP or CourierIMAP.
