Save Files to SQL Server 2005 database

I need to save (and then display) various types of files (word, excel, email etc) to a sql server 2005 dB.  I will be using an application developed in VB.net 2005.  I think I need to convert the files to binary but am at a loss where to start.  This is not  an internet type project so if possible I do not wish to use any web based solutions.

Thanks for that - i will be saving word etc directly to the sql dB from the path name on the network - i was hoping to save the email from outlook but now having thought about this a bit more can see this is unrealistic!!  Save the email to the hard drive and then save as for the word doc seems the way to go

I think that's almost the only option. I have never seen another solution so far.
