VPN Clients lose Exchange server

I have several telecommuters using the Cisco VPN client to attach to our network via a PIX 515.  Although the VPN connection will remain solid they either cannot access the Windows 2003 Server / Exchange at all ("Exchange server is offline or not responding") or they can attach it but then lose the connection after some time.  They will also lose mapped drives to this same server periodically although the VPN remains connected.  This is a sporadic problem, they can attach Outlook and map drives approx. 75% of the time.  I am using the FQDN in the Outlook setup and the "Check Names" button typically returns the underline.  Thanks.

you may need to adjust the "Server Timeout" on the email client...

I have ratcheted that up to 120 sec. but it hasn't helped.  Also,  I don't think that would explain why the mapped drives cannot be made or maintained would it?  Thanks.
something is timing out.....

try this ...    http://www.pingplotter.com/freeware.html
it will give you a better idea of how the connections are...
I concur.  When I ping the server with the VPN engaged, I get one or two responses @ 35ms followed by 2 "request timed out".  I think the problem is between the PIX and the server but I don't know how best to troubleshoot it.  I'll try the pingplotter app you suggested.  Thank you very much.

As noted above, I have found the Exchange server is only answering ping requests sporadically.  There are other hosts on the network that respond quickly and with 100% success rate (there is a networked printer that responds better than the server).  I have reviewed the logs and set monitors on the NIC and CPU but by all indications the server is coasting.  There are only 12 users on it.  Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this further?  Thanks.
