replacing a faulty profile

A user within the organisation needs to have her profile changed.  I have created a new one for them, their old one was JBLOGGS, the new one is JZBLOGGS.  How is the correct way to do this, everything works, except I kept the old account/mail account alive but rerouted it to the new JZBLOGGS.  The user is not recieving email from outside the organisation, what am I doing wrong?
