How to set up a static IP on Mac G5 with leopard installed?

Mac G5 with leopard 10.5 installed.

We have a server here (PC) that already has a static ip and gateway. I want to set up the G5 so that the address never changes because of the pc accessing it. The mac uses appletalk with no problem.

I was going to assign 192.168.1.97, with a subnet mask as 255.255.255.0. Our wireless router gateway is 192.268.1.1. I do not want the G5 to assign ip addresses to the pcs. I will not be using DHCP on the G5.

Go to the Apple logo in the upper left hand corner and choose system preferences. In system preferences choose network. In network choose configure and then choose Manually. After that look at where the IP address is you can type in the IP address you want the computer to have along with she subnet mask. Note when you go into system preferences it may ask you for the admin password to make changes. Hope this helps

Can I configure this Mac on the same subnet as the pc server.

192.168.1.xx is the server, and the gateway for the server is 192.168.1.1

Yes, just make the Mac 192.168.1.5 or something. You will want to make sure that the DHCP server does not hand it out though. Either use an address that is outside the DHCP range (IE: it might be set to hand out 192.168.1.10-192.168.1.250) or you will have to enter an exclusion.

Either way, there are no issues with Macs and Windows being on the same subnet. If you want to have them on different subnets for some reason, I recommend converting to the 10.x.x.x IP range. It is private, like 192.168.x.x but is routable.
