Difference between online/offline snapshots in VMWare Workstation 6?

I notice that if I take a snapshot with the VM online, the memory is captured and also the vsn file is larger than if I take a snapshot of the same machine when it's offline.

My question is, if I don't care about the state of the memory, but just the contents and configuration of files on the virtual hard drive, is an offline snapshot good enough?

It seems to happen so fast, and capture so little, that I'm afraid to rely on it.

I know I could just test it, which I'm going to do when I get a chance, but for now I'd like to pose the question here and see what people think.

Thanks.

VMware, a software company founded in 1998, was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies. VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture. Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.
