SAS Drives with SATA Drives?

I have a Dell Power Edge 2950 currently configured with two SAS drives on a PERC5/i controller.  I want to add storage (just bulk storage, no real performance concerns).  I have spoken with Dell and they have indicated that since I have SAS drives installed, I cannot add SATA drives.  It was my understanding that the SAS standard was created so that drive types could be mixed or matched.

My question is, are they just trying to sell me more SAS drives or is this the case?  I want to make sure that I do not kill the controller, but I also do not want to get taken.  Thanks.

Ok, that is what I was afraid of (it is rack mount so I cannot see a way to add the disks if there is an onboard SATA connector).  To ask a followup question, if I want to got to all SATA drives, what are my options for imaging the server.  I know that I cannot use Ghost as they warn all over that it is not compatable...
That's a good question, my answer (or what I would do) is load up a linux live CD and image the drives over the net with DD and Netcat.

What OS is the box running?
