Best way to extend Active Directory for 2003 R2

I have existing (older than dirt) Windows 2003 servers for domain controllers (2 of them).  I have added 5 Windows 2003 R2 boxes to the network and I wanted to make 2 of them domain controllers and, eventually, retire those old (Pentium Pro) domain controllers.

When I went to try and make a 2003 R2 box a domain controller I was told I could not because Active Directory needed to be extended for 2003 R2.  But then I couldn't run that utility (can't recall thename) on the 2003 R2 box because it wasn't a domain controller.

Can someone point me in the right direction as far as how to best extend AD to make my 2003 R2 boxes DCs?

It is cumbersome, but it answered my concern about running ADPREP from the R2 CD and was successful.
