Ubuntu won't reclaim free space made by deleting trash content...

I have an Ubuntu 8.04 machine set up with an external 750G usb drive attached to it.  I've deleted everything on the drive to free up space for our local backups.  I've empty the hidden trash folders in a terminal session since this had seemed to be an issue in the past according to other users (I've searched the db about this problem b4 writting this).  Still, when I check to see how much space is available I realize that about 30 GIGs are still missing from the total 750G.  I have no idea where the 30 gig resides on the drive. When I use the ls command I get no files/folders listed.  Is there another hidden foilder that I am missing?   Also,  how do I reformat the drive in the fs ext3.  What are the command lines to do this?

Hello!
Those 30 G are on different partition of your USB drive.
You need to repartition drive to have just one partition.

Ok, so can you tell me how to do that, like what command to erase all partition on the drive and then recreate drive with one partition of 750g formatted as ext3??

you can try cfdisk its pretty easy in use tool.
You need to point it to your USB device like:
cfdisk /dev/

I think you know your device name. but remember it must be a device not its partition. for ex:
/dev/sda      <--- this is device
/dev/sda1    < --- those two are partitions
/dev/sda2

With this tool you ca delete partitions and create single one again.
Run cfdisk as ROOT!

I like to use kdirstat (http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net) to look for large directories and files. Very useful tool for that purpose.

So I used the cfdisk...  I had originaly created 2 empty folder on the drive to be reformatted.  After using cfdisk properly (writting changes and all...) the empty folders still remain after remounting drive... Like nothing happened.  any help pls...
