Microsoft, server, 2003, slow at 4pm

Hi gang,

I recently setup a new network with server SBS basic 2003 running AD
with 5 users. All clients are running XP pro. We are using the
Comcast business gateway router for DHCP piggybacking off the
routers 4 port switch to a netgear 16port gigabit switch. I am using
2 ports on the Comcast switch one going to the server and one going
to the netgear. All other clients are going directly to the netgear.
I am basically using the server as a file server. 2 data bases,
QuickBooks & Act and 5 user directories with one public directory.
Everything works as it should all day until 4pm. I have a power user
that is experiencing tremendous lag around 4pm everyday. I have the
backup scheduled for 11pm in the evening. I don't believe trend
micro is scanning then (I will check). From what I can tell there is
nothing scheduled to run at that time? My client is forced to close
out of all applications and reboot. At that point I believe he is
back in business. Although the server has exchange we are not using
it yet. He claims that opening word documents from the server are
the slowest at that time? Does anyone have any idea what could be
happening?

Thanks in advance,

Don't know if this is your issue, but every SBS install I've worked with has issues with SQL Server instances over-allocating memory until there's none left...

Here is a good article describing the symptoms and the fix.

Hi Victor,

From what I understand from your description, only 1 user is experiencing these difficulties.

Options I would look at on the workstation in question:

Option 1.
Ask the user to restart their computer at 3:55pm, and log in but don't use the computer till 4:02pm
If it is still slow, go to option 2.
This will eliminate any programs they are manually running or are remnant in memory.

Option 2.
Restart the computer at 3:55 and boot into safe mode with networking.
Is the access still slow at 4pm?
If not, there may be something else running in the background under normal windows.

Option 3.
At 3:55pm open Task Manager sort by and monitor the: RAM usage and CPU usage for 10 mins
Locate any programs that have either a high RAM usage or CPU usage

Option 4.
Open Performance Monitor
From 3:55pm, as a minimum, monitor:
- CPU
- RAM
- Disk I/O

You could also check the amount of RAM remaining the user has in their workstation under normal opperation, it may need to be upgraded.

Hope this helps.

Further... Option:
You should check the event logs on the workstation in question to see what is happening at 4pm each day.

Hi Victor,

Any update on this one?
Happy to continue troubleshooting the issue if you still can't resolve this.
