Browse (dont use the hotlinks) to the program files folder to the appropriate .exe file and select it.<br />

Start excel in safe mode:<br />

On the help menu, choose Detect And Repair. This will cause Excel to run some diagnostic procedures and attempt to fix a corrupted environment. You may be asked to restart Excel or perhaps even restart Windows. You may need to provide your Office installation CD. After Detect and Repair is completed, close and restart Excel normally.<br />

Are these files being opened over a network or locally?<br />
There may be network issues rather than Office issues.<br />
<br />
Try copying one of the files to the user's desktop and opening it from there.<br />

i've even created dummy files, real simple xls and doc, right on the desktop...same result.<br />

i've also disabled antivirus, same result...<br />

i'll go ahead and try the repair process next, but not sure if it would help as opening file from inside excel / word works perfectly.<br />

1. Try recreating the normal.dot template file. Best way to do this is to rename the existing one to end with &quot;.old&quot; and start Word. Then try opening a document through Windows Explorer. If this works we can also do the same for Excel.<br />

2. Open Word. Try dragging the file onto the title bar for Word. Does this make it fast or is it still slow?<br />
<br />
3. Try to start Word with the /a switch on the command line. This causes it to load without also loading different startup files such as add-ins and macros. Then try opening a word file from Windows Explorer (with Word still open from the first part of this point).<br />

Before I do mention the next point, you could also try disabling antivirus and firewall on the workstation (just temporarily) and try opening the document through Windows Explorer.

Repairing/Reinstalling Office<br />

1. Repair Office:<br />
- Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs<br />
- click on Microsoft Office, then click &quot;Repair&quot;<br />

2. Reinstall Office:<br />
Only perform the following after taking a full backup of your registry and are aware of how to restore it, if you do not know how to backup/restore the registry you can find this by searching microsoft.com.<br />

This will force Office to recreate all of it's settings:<br />
<br />
1. Uninstall Office<br />
2. Restart<br />
3. Open the registry Editor<br />
4. Backup the whole registry to a safe location<br />
5. Backup and then Delete the following registry keys (and all their sub keys):<br />
(note, &quot;X&quot; represents the version of Office you have installed)<br />
&nbsp; - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR<wbr />E\Microsof<wbr />t\Office\X<wbr /><br />

6. Restart computer<br />
7. Reinstall Office<br />
8. Test documents through Windows Explorer

also, if i open an unknown type of file, it takes forever to open too...seems like a windows issue at this point....

Go to the Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types. Highlight the XLS extension and then click Advanced. Click Open from the list, and then click Edit. Add &quot;%1&quot; (quotes are needed) to the end of the Application used string (which will probably end with /e for the Excel XLS extension example.) Also uncheck the DDE box. Thanks to Starksnet from the Excel 2007 forum for this fix that was more general than he may have thought!<br />
