I have a Dell Poweredge 1750 with a three drive (36GB Fujitsu SCSI) RAID 5 array. The third drive in the array (number 2) is bad. I have ordered an identical drive and will have it in the morning. When I insert the new drive into the server should I go into the BIOS of the Perc 4/DI controller to rebuild it? What is the best way to get this system back up and running.
other info
now when I try to start the system with the bad drive the POST finishes and the perc card does say that the 1 logical drive is down graded. After it finishes the POST and tries to boot, the screen is just black with nothing on it.

The drive will automatically rebuild with the RAID 5 array.
It should rebuild automatically, but it also should still let you boot and work as normal.
I might try removing the failed drive and see if it boots with the drive missing.

I have looked in the BIOS of Perc and it says that drive 2 (third drive in the array) has failed. I have not tried to boot with just the two drives. will it be ok to try this?

How can I hot swap the drive when the system will not boot. Do i do this in the Bios, that is the only way I can see the drive, the system is not booting. Do I unberstand I keep the bad drive in the array, turn the server on wait until it the black screen appears on the monitor and then remove the thrid drive and install the new one?
Im unsure about the black screen; if only one drive is bad then you should still be able to boot to an OS.
You should replace the drive as soon as possible, because you do not want to find out what 2 bad drives in a raid 5 array is all about.
It sounds as though you are having some other issue if you cant boot the server at all. Are there any indications of failures during the POST?

it only says that the logical drive is downgraded. and in the BIOS it says that drive 0 and drive 1 are onlline but drive 2 has failed. I am concerned about the system no booting too. I will know in the morning. any more info would be great

That's right. If one out of 3 drives fail, the OS is still booting. Look at your physical drive after you boot it up. Did you see all the LED were green?
You may need to do these things:
- Shut down the server
- Resit your hard drive, memory
- Boot the server up and get in BIOS. Try to bring drive 2 online
- Replace drive 2 when your OS is back up
I am working with a Dell tech, the system should boot with just the two drives in it. I booted the system with a windows server 2003 cd and when it starts to load the cd the screen goes black also.
that is an update

You seem having the hardware issues. Did you follow my instruction to resit the hardware?
