Tapes are taken from other media sets, do i need to vault items ?

I thought media sets would protect tapes from different types of backups, not true.

Do I need to set up a vault for each type of job?

Where do i find an example strategy / tutorial or could you make up an example ?

Generally speaking, how do I go about organizing d w m  jobs such that they don't "steal" tapes designated for those purposes ?

Thanks much.

Tools->options-media management, select overwrite recyclable media in the target media set before overwriting scratch media will help but it will still take from other media sets if there are no overwritable tapes in the target set.

One common mistake is to set up a 28 day rotation and have it write protect the tapes for 28 days but it should be 27 days since the time starts when the job is completed.

Thanks for responding, but please clarify why I wouldn't use vaults or how to use vaults.

I need to keep the tapes separate and am unable to predict the usage and the "non-writable-ness" of the media... I'd rather have the job fail than overwrite a tape from another media set.

Currently I have to take a tape out of "retired" and pray it doesn't get overwritten by one of the jobs before the job I want written to it starts up that night.  Which of course is lame... and taxing of the brain  when managing various jobs and media sets and tapes...

I Would love to just  have buckets of tapes that don't overwrite each other...

Thanks again.
