I wonder if the share is actually where you think it is located on the server. Go to Administrative Tools&gt; Computer Management&gt;Share Folders&gt;Shares. See where it actually says the public folder is located. It may be on the C Drive.

yes, it's there alright...on the D: drive...<br />
like i said i can get to it if I run d:\public, but just d:\ nothing shows up. &nbsp;I've never seen anything like it. &nbsp;the drive shows it has 40GB of data on it but there are no listings - but they're there

no, it's not hidden. wouldn't the folder at least appear lighter and transparent if it were - like the Application Data folder?<br />

If you see the Application Data folder as a lighter icon then you have Show hidden files and folders turned on. Well, I'm running out of ideas. <br />

Check computer management &gt;&nbsp;Storage &gt;&nbsp;Disk Management make sure that the correct drive is assigned to D:. Sometimes When you plug in an external HD or flash drive windows tries to assign a drive letter that's already in use, usually if this happens though it's the new drive that isn't visible.<br />

I wouldn't necessarily think that you would still have access to the public files if this were the case, but like I said I'm running out of ideas. If this doesn't work I may have to defer to someone that's smarter than me. Good luck with it if this doesn't do it for you.

To check hidden files and folders open your C drive or any other folder in explorer and go to Tools&gt;Folder Options&gt;View&gt;Hidden Files and Folders

all the settings are completely normal...<br />
users have not complained about accessing these files...I noticed it b/c they're getting a scanner and I was creating a scan folder under the public folders but when I opened My Computer there was nothing there. &nbsp;Still in My Computer if I enter D:\Public in the address bar I can create the folder but I'm wondering why the hell I can see the root of the drive.<br />

If I go into cmd and cd d: and dir, it says there's no data, but I can for d:\public.<br />
I'm completely baffled.

Do you know if this is 2003 Small Business Server, 2003 Standard or 2003 Enterprise?<br />

The only reason I ask is that I know SBS works differently out of the box. I have very little experience with it, but it handles some security things differently than the other server 2003 products.

so, I rebooted the server again - third time and....<br />
it wouldn't come back online. &nbsp;Sent a tech out to troubleshoot (office is 2 hrs from me) - he can't bring the server back, but running a tool he can see the windows files are on the D: drive rather than the C: - completely backwards! &nbsp;He can't rectify to get c: back as the windows root...he'll have to reimage.<br />

I have no idea how this happened or how the files are visible one way but not another.<br />
No alerts. &nbsp;No strange logs.

Ok...the server is back up after reimaging and I've done some more investigating.<br />

i have found on the DFS server the folder IS hidden and the attribute is disabled for me to unhide - wondering if this has something to do w/the problem..<br />

Any ideas how to get the hidden attribute removed?<br />

Since the server crashed I can't completely confirm whether the reason for the files not showing up is b/c they were hidden on the DFS server, but I'm willing to bet it's tied to it!<br />
