knoppix hard drive rescue

Hi all,
I have a failed hard drive and I am attempting to recover the data from it.  I am planning on using knoppix with ddrescue.  When I hook up the bad hard drive, I get a SMART failure from the bios.  So, I disabled the SMART status in the bios, and booted to knoppix.  How ever, knoppix doesnt' see taht the device exists.  I tried mounting the drive, but knoppix doesnt' see the drive.  Can I do a find or something... maybe tweak the fstab file?
Any thoughts?

the problem is that the drive only shows up in the bios and no where else.  I am planning on using knoppix and ddrescue to make an image of the drive so I can get my data from the image.

you can try to hook the disk to other motherboards; some will see it "earlier" than others.
you can also try to test the disk, and check if that "sees" the disk :

Newbe-- I must stress to take the advice of Dbrunton and myself-- Slave the drive on another operating system (understand that windows probably wont show the drive in My Computer or Computer management--but thats ok)  And use one of the tools we listd above to recover your data.

Dont run the hard drive through tests of any sort!!!!  The drive is on its last leg and tests will only limit if not completely take away chances of recovery.

I hate to be so harsh about it, but this is really a borderline job, and there isn't much room for error.  Good Luck and ask questions if you need it please.

i did not say test it, just asked if the diag sees the drive...

Yeah, I don't want to test it or do anythign with the drive.... I just want to image it so I can use the image to recover the data, not from the drive.  I don't want to use Windows programs to run diagnostics on the drive... I don't want to read the drive at all, except to pull an image off.

Veedar, I am going to give your command a shot... I will let you know.

sudo  fdisk  -l only lists the good hard drive.

Well if it's not seen by fdisk you can not use ddrescue. You may want to give the freezer method a try...
