Moving Users to different OU's in Active Directory

I need to reorganise our Active Directory.  I want to rename OU's and move users around from one to another.

I've not done this before and just want to check whether I may have problems after doing this?

My reason is that I wan to apply different Group Policies to different users and they currently reside in different OU's

Thank you!

Just create the OUs and drag the user accounts into the desired OUs using "Active Directory users and Computers"

If you have not got the Group Policy Management Console installed, I would download sand install it - it makes managing GPOs much easier http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a6d4c24-8cbd-4b35-9272-dd3cbfc81887&displaylang=en

Thank you KCTS, I have the GP Management Console installed and you are right, it does make things a lot clearer! :)

So moving users and computers around to different OU's will NOT cause any problems?

Moving users to different OUs will change the group policies that get applied to them. Say if you have a Sales OU and you move a user from Marketing OU, the user will get all group policies applied to the Sales OU and not Marketing.

Check the different group policies that you have using Group Policy Management Console. And if you are moving users to a newly created OU, there is no harm.

And there is no harm in renaming the existing OUs as they are just containers.

Fab advice, thank you both!
I have checked the group policies and moved some users and it didn't break!! lol

When I delete an empty OU it says that it will delete mailboxes and I can't untick this - the OU is empty so it won't delete anything it shouldn't will it?
