SSL Certificate and DNS problem with Outlook Web Access

I recently installed an SSL Certificate on our SBS 2003 for webmail. When I access webmail via https:// mail.XXXX.XXX/exchange I don't get any warning about certificates. But if I use the (real) IP address - https://xxx.xxx.xxx/exchange I get the warning message about an invalid certificate.
All clients are WinXP SP3 and IE7
3 questions:
1. Why does this happen?
2. Can it be resloved?
3. Is this really an issue because nobody will realistically be using the IP address to access webmail.
