Proper Way to setup MX and Reverse DNS.

We have been having an ongoing battle with some email issues.

At the moment we have a Exchange 2007 Server that is hosted in a Colo. We do not have a website for this domain. The registrar is Godaddy. We have the DNS Servers at godaddy pointing to the Colo.

When I go to www.mxtoolbox.com and put in the domain name it says it finds the exchange server just fine but it says there is no Reverse DNS pointer record. The Colo says they are not responsible for that and that they don't set that up.

I need to know what the proper setup is and who I need to have setup what.

Thanks,
ExchangeDNS

Thanks guys.  I was able to go back to the ISP and actually speak to someone who knew what they were doing and easily took care of it.

Chris and Bipod,

Thanks for the response. The IP is 208.67.58.124

I have asked for a Reverse DNS and they said their company policy is to not point anything outside of the network. This makes no sense to me.

Also, is there anything I have to put on my Domain Controllers DNS in this Colo? I have Six servers there. 2 Domain Controllers and the Exchange Server and some other stuff.

One thing that may play a part in any problems is that the original I.T. person who installed them setup the internal domain with a .net which happens to be the name of one of their domains they purchased to receive email.

Thanks,

That's absurb. They won't be, your server is hosted within their environment. If they stick to that they may as well forget being a hosting company.

Nope, internal DNS config is pretty straight-forward here.

It's not a particularly big problem. It only restricts you when it comes to trying to use domain.net for a website. There's not much else that gets in the way there.

These are your hosts?

I haven't managed to find any thing about PTR registration on their site which isn't promising.

If they won't add a PTR you'll have to relay mail out through a system that does have it set. Is that something they would charge you for?
