First make sure there are no removable media devices in your computer. i.e no floppy disks, no CD's, no thumb drives. If there are remove them and reboot.<br />

I have seen on many occasions RAM that has become unseated or is bad cause this error( i know that sounds far fetched...but i promise). So open up the machine and check that the RAM is seated properly in the memory slots. . .and test against known good memory if you have some. <br />
<br />
If those don't work you'll need to pull a good copy of ntfs.sys from the XP disk:<br />
<br />
1. Insert the XP installation CD-ROM and reboot your machine. <br />
2. When the installation menu appears, press the R key to start an RC session. <br />
3. When prompted, select the installation and enter the Administrator password. <br />
4. At the console, navigate to the system32\drivers folder by typing :<br />
cd \windows\system32\drivers<br />
Rename the current ntfs.sys file by typing: <br />
ren ntfs.sys ntfs.bad<br />
Copy the ntfs.sys file from your installation CD-ROM to your current location by typing: <br />
copy :\i386\ntfs.sys .<br />
Be sure you include the period at the end of the command to instruct your system to use the current location. <br />
Remove the XP installation CD-ROM, then restart your machine. <br />
