what errors are you seeing?<br />

If you change the name, your tnsnames and/or listener configuration may need to change too.<br />
Your database may be fine but you can't connect to it because your client is trying to connect to the old name and then can't find the database

if u have a static IP for the computer where oracle is installed please use IPaddress instead fo host name in both listener and tnsnames.ora

Note, if you are connecting to your database from multiple servers, you will have to update the tnsnames.ora on each of them.<br />

actually I suggest you don't use tnsnames at all, but instead use ldap regardless of whether you have static or dynamic ip.<br />

I prefer names to ip's, but, if you really do have static ip's then they are safe to use as well.
