Troubleshooting second exchange server

We have one exchange server (2003) running on Windows server 2003 standard edition SP2. I installed Exchange on another server with the same exact OS. Everything went fine during the install and both servers show up in System manager.
I created a test user and moved him to that server. I can connect via Outlook and send mail just fine. However I can't seem to receive mail email from inside the network. I sent an email from gmail and it did come in but took 20 minutes from the time I sent it to when it showed up in outlook.
Now I can ping both servers from each other using both the computer name and the FQDN. I'm not sure if I missed some crucial step during the install or what's wrong here.
Anyone have any ideas as to what my problem might be or what I can do to troubleshoot it?

I forgot to add this in the first post and I'm sure it has some bearing here. The 2 Exchange servers are separated by a VPN and are in different sites as well in ADSS.

Update, maybe this helps someone figure this out before I do. Checked message tracking and based on one of the errors I was receiving and some google searches it turns out it may be due to the 2 pixes between the exchange servers. something about the SMTP fixup.

Sound familiar to anyone?
