OST will not sync after the restore of a Exchange Database

We had our exchange server to crash and now we restored from an earlier  backup and now the users which were in the cache mode can not get there outlook to sync with the server to get new mail. If I turn off the cache mode for the users they can see the mailbox data as it exist on the server but the .ost file will not update with the server since the restore. If I rename the .ost and have the outlook to create a new one it will sync all of the data to the new file but there's a gap in between when the database was restored.

Can we get the existing .ost to sync with the newly restored database by manipulating something in ADSIEDIT.MSC or something. if not we will have to delete all of the users .ost's which will loose mail or export all of the .ost data to a pst  and reimport it to there mailboxes which is a long tedious process.
