Backup software in parrallel. HP Data Protector & Symantec Backup Exec 10d & 9

Hi All,

I am putting in a new HP Data protector backup system for a client.  They currently are running a mixed site : Novell 6.5 w/GroupWise, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 with SQL 2000 and 2005 as well as a HP Unix Box.  Their current backup software is Backup Exec 9 for NetWare & 10d for windows.

We are moving to HP Data protector D2D plus HP Mirroring for the DR Site.  These are dedicated box's (HP AIO 1200 w6TB Storage).

My question is: While we are installing/migrating to the new backup software can the Symantec software be installed and running in parallel (not synchronies backup).  So to clarify, only the software will be installed.  Backup jobs will run concurrently, not consecutively.

As I said during the post, the backups will not be running concurrently so bandwidth will not be an issue.  i agree with you about the 'I can't see why not'  however as the client is a bank i'm looking for a 'yes, i've done this' or 'no, everything goes down the tube' kind of response.

You need to re-visit your question again:

You said "Backup jobs will run concurrently, not consecutively."
Now you say "As I said during the post, the backups will not be running concurrently"

So make up your mind here, then post back with a clarified response so we know what you're talking about.

shoot!  sorry, i missed the NOT part of that statement.   sigh.

I'll also add that the same things apply to the unix and windows side as they do to Netware. You will almost surely get errors in your event log though if they access files simultaneously.

For instance if VSC is running and 2 backup programs access it at once - only one will have access and the other will fail and whine about it.

Unix boxes have worked fine for me with BE and a plain old copy command like...what's the name ... Rsync I think. No problems with simultaneous access either. But like I said, ymmv.

Hi Silverthorn21:

I think I have the answer to your question!
My question is: While we are installing/migrating to the new backup software can the Symantec software be installed and running in parallel (not synchronies backup).

We very recently went through the same migration, with almost the exact same system and setup.  You can indeed run the software for both DP and Veritas at the same time; you will need to utilize your DP software support contract and ask HP for information about KB# WaveLan431.  If you have a valid HP mirror software license then that makes it even easier.

Anyway we had some consulting services when we went through the installation and I would be happy to provide you with the contact details.
Things to be aware of:
- You'll only be able to run full backups.   If you try to run incremental backups with two products, the "other" one will have stomped on the archive bits of the files, and you won't be backing up every thing you need.
- Backup applications may fight over the backup devices, causing some, or unending, grief.
