Symantec Mail Secuirty for Microsoft Exchange service depends the following service ntlmssp ERROR during install

I am setting up a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) that has all windows updates installed.  I am trying to install Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 6.0 (64-bit) and every time about half way through the install I get this error window that says "Failed starting Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchang service."  Then I look at the event log and see this:

Event ID : 7003  / Source: Service Control Manager Eventlog

Message: The Symantec Mail Secuirty for Microsoft Exchange service depends the following service ntlmssp.  This service might not be installed.

This had trashed my Exchange Server 2007 64-bit (which has all updates as well) and I had to format and reload the entire file server.  Even after reloading the entire Server 2008 I still get this, fortunatelly this time the Exchange Server still works.  I also noticed after this happens I can no longer view the "Application Log" in the event viewer ONLY.  It says Access Denied.

I also have Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 64-bit virus only installed.  Nothing else from that CD or options (did custom install to skip symantec firewall).  I have every option in the IIS role installed on the server.

Damn Symantec, any help would be great.

Torrey

The problem is that the NtLmSsp service isn't running when other services that depend on it attempt to initialize.

Look at your services and make sure that it is running and not set to "disable."

wdurrett,

I dont see "NtLmSsp" listed in the services.

How do I install it?  I could not find anything on-line how to get it installed on 2008 Server.

I found someone saying in the network add it as a service to your network adapter but when I try to add a service to my network adapter on the Server 2008 none are listed in the box to add, like they are all already installed.

Torrey

wdurrett,

I called Symantec support twice yesterday before I posted this today and after 3+ hours of getting the run around they kept telling me it's my problem.  I knew it's not because I found a few others having the same problem with no resolve.

I called Symantec back today and today's tech told me Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange v6.0 that comes on the boxed disc or any shipped disc does not install properly with Windows Server 2008 64-bit.  I was directed to https://fileconnect.symantec.com where you put your serial # in and can get the latest downloads for your product.  They had Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange v6.0.6.235 that was released on JUNE 2nd 2008 which installed without error and without trashing my Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server.

Your input about NTLMSSP not being available on Windows Server 2008 along with my information hopefully will help others that come upon this problem.  The tech I spoke to today was oddly very knowledgeable.

I've had it with Symantec Products.  I've stopped using Symantec desktop solutions about 2 years ago and strictly use ZoneAlarm Internet Security for businesses and Avast Free Home Ed. for residential installs.  This is my last Symantec Server/Corporate install EVER (I hope).

Torrey
