How to replace a primary server on a domain

Hello,

I have a 2008 box and need to configure it to be the main DNS server on the existing domain.
There is already a primary DNS server (2003).

Is there a document somewhere that lays out the steps of replacing the DNS server without the risk of having two different primary servers during transitioning ??

The server is a DC, also an AD integrated domain.
The DNS doesn't seem to be populating with the DNS entries from the site.

I am connecting to this server when configuring DNS. Adding it as a secondary, adding the main current DNS server to copy the zone from.
When thats done, nothing shows up in the forward lookup zone or reverse. When I compare the other secondary DNS server (total of 3 servers) i found out that the new one doesn't have an SOA, when clicking on the tab its grayed out with "Data is not available".

I have also tried setting up as a primary, still no data.

I dont have that option in the installation list. there is the primary, secondary, or stub zone.
I am working on 2008 server.

Does that have anything to do with it?

It is a DC.
I doubted myself and tried to dcpromo the server, got a msg saying "Your computer is already An Active Directory domain controller"

Ok.
This server has been reloaded twice, it was my testing server 2008. Apparently the server was getting DHCP IP all along, and I had set up a static IP, the network cable was in the one that has no Static IP. Which created a bit of a conflict communicating with other servers regarding DNS and such.

Once i found that out and resolved it, all is working well.

I apologize for wasting your time, although I did learn few things in the process.

:) Thanks alot guys.
