Server crashed need to get exchange data off, no good backup

Here is the issue the power cord was pulled during and electrical storm. After restart I can log on to server using any user account. Most services fail to start, can not access active directory or exchange mailboxes, network window shows no nic cards listed but I can ipconfig and get addresses, run HP utility on NIC cards and it comes back fine, can view event viewer but can't open any events, services window opens with blank screen with blue box in extended services window, standard services appear but can't open any services, most timeout on when attempting to start services. Sadly there is no usable backup at this point of exchange. All we want to get off the box is the exchange data that I hope to be able to import to another exchange box. I can't copy or paste any items at this time. Any thoughts would be great. Right now we are pretty stuck. The box will open in any chosen mode but nothing good comes of it.

you could attempt to run Data Recovery software like
Data restore
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/

http://www.runtime.org/ - getdata back

If you can get into the box and get to the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA folder you can copy off the databases.
Create the Recovery Storage Group and mount the dbs there. Exmerge will get your data back.
Worst case: Perform an export from everyone's Outlook in Offline mode.

As long as you still have access to the database files themselves you should be able to recreate the exchange environment and use the recovery storage group feature to recovery the mailboxes.

here is some additional info: server can't be seen on the network, the copy function does not work, can't launch any programs from CD or USB stick. Don't know if there is a way to copy things from the command prompt?

Well the databases are still there at least!

Sounds like you may have hardware or OS issues. I recommend working to resolve these before proceeding further. If the server is not recoverable you will have to work toward rebuilding exchange, that is when you would need a copy of the databases on hand.

any thoughts on where to start that process, I have been able to run a spyware scan removed only some minor issues, no virus scan at this point, I can see everything on my server and can log on and off with no worries but that is about it? I am at a loss as to where to start. I have tried to reboot in safe mode, last known, and directory services (or recovery) and I can log in but don't really get anywhere, the HP hardware tests all come back ok.

Hi,
Do not panic. What is your Storage like if it is a normal HDD, just take it to some Recovery Vendor (ex Stellar) and get the data recovered. This way you can first get your EX DB going and then you can put the HDD back and se if you want to troubleshoot it further or want to start all over again.
I would have done this as more time I waste more time I would need to setup my Messaging Environemnt back up and running.
Hope this helps
Thanks

Looking for any help to get the ex db off without using a recovery vendor, all I need off the box is exchange, the server will not go back into use, email has been moved to another service. I just need to get the email history out of exchange.

Thanks everyone

If the client's OST files are still good and Outlook fires up on the clients okay then you can export from Outlook to a PST file.

If the OST files are okay, use an OST to PST file converter on each client to get the data.

If mounting the recovered stores into a storage recovery group and running Exmerge on it is no longer an option, then things are getting pretty slim for options.
