Outbox locks up outlook express

After composing a message and attaching some rather large .jpg files, the message was sent. Because the message was too large, the program locks up. Because the program wants to load the message before it can be deleted it locks up. A search for the outbox file (outbox.dbx) to delete it and replace it with an empty file through file manager came up with no such file. I followed the path from the properties on the out box only to find the identifier folder empty.  How do you get rid of that message? Running on Windows XP.

Hello Pat_Holman,

The procedure is to locate the outbox.dbx file. With Outlook Express close, delete it. Restart Outlook Express, a new outbox.dbx file will be created by Windows.

The outbox.dbx file is a hidden file, so you have to unhide hidden files to see it. In Windows XP, open Windows Explorer or any folder.  Click on Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders".  If you want to see system files as well, unclick Hide protected operating system files.   Click OK.

DBX files are normally located in
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ folder.

Hope this helps!

ASKER

I tried this procedure. There is no folders in the  folder unless they are super hidden. Definitely not visible, nor 'hidden.'

In registry, under
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{HEXA_IDENTYTY}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0]
you will find a string value called Store Root which will point you to the store folder.
Replace HEXA_IDENTITY above with EACH identities you will find under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\
as you don't know which one is the right one. If it's only one, it's easier! :)
Go to the store folder (if multiple indentities, go to each one of them), find Outbox.dbx and rename / delete it (with OE closed - yes, I know it won't start in your case, but for future pointings to this topic it's better to be noticed).
Hope this helps!
Thank you War1. I found it in the search. I forgot to set hidden files in my first search. I've been away from this stuff too long. Can you explain why I could not find the folders and file under the  folder?  the \microsoft\outlook express\outbox.dbx

Pat_Holman,

I am not sure why you could not find the file under hex folder.  The folder could have been hidden and you did not unhide it.

If this solves the problem for you, why the B grade?
