Disable &quot;security&quot; on the router (WEP can't really be regarded as secure, it can be cracked within minutes). Now check if you can connect to it with SUSE. Also make sure you haven't enabled MAC Address filtering on the router. If it works without security, change to WPA PSK on the router, that is much more secure, it can't be cracked without the cracker knowing the pre-shared-key, and even then it is very hard to crack. Now check if you can still connect with SUSE.

I made the router to have no security an and open system, I also mentioned it in my initial post, but it did not help. I am well versed wtih configuring routers and the downfalls of WEP encryption, but this internal card is not working with any of the settings and is not getting an IP address on DHCP. I would try giving it a static address next and see if its able to talk.. would post my response soon<br />

I tried giving this wireless nic a static IP but that did not work either. When I ping the gateway (router) by its IP address, it comes back as destination host unreachable

Then either the card doesn't work (is broken) or you have the wrong drivers for it. I'd get another card.

Did you try to use this site for help with linux wireless<br />

That is the site that keeps track of all the wireless stuff for linux, if your card is not mentioned there it will not work with the current linux kernel and you will have to wait till they write a driver for it.<br />

Other questions I got for you:<br />
1 what is the brand of the card and the model?<br />
2 Did the card ever work with windows installed on this particular pc ?<br />
3 you mentioned that you turned of security, does that include mac adres filtering.<br />
4 suse 11 turns on its firewall by default, is it on or off ?

So far I have reinstalled windows on the laptop reformatting the hard drive and the card worked perfectly with just plug n play in Windows XP so for sure its not a bad card and buying a new card is not a viable option for me.<br />

I also have a built in wireless card on the laptop, Suse seems to detect it and configure it, when I do a list scan, I can see all the available wireless networks in the neighbourhood. I tried to configure it to attach to my wireless router, but it is not getting an IP address through DHCP. My router has WEP security with a shared key, it is working as other Windows laptops work fine wirelessly on this. I have even tried to make the wireless network &quot;open&quot; without encryption, but my laptop's built in network card still cant get an IP address from DHCP.
