asked on

how to creat additional dhcp server in a singal forest domain

i have a single domain in my network & 300 clients, and i have one domain controller & one additional domain controller in DC i have DNS server & DHCP Server also, my question is that is that possible we can make other or additional  DHCP server in my network so that in future whenever my dc server goes down then our users can get ips from my other dhcp server which is running in same forest.

Of course it is possible - you just need to remember that the DHCP scopes must NEVER overlap. IF they were to overlap, you would end up with IP conflicts and major issues - particularly if your network has lots of DHCP-attached devices.

As Ruscal has said, DHCP is just one component out of many others which you will need to build redundancy into. DNS is one. You will also want to look at the file system - where are files stored and can you use DFS to replicate them to another server?

The best option for this on a single subnet is to split the DHCP scope down the middle

Set up the servers along the following lines

Server A                                                                         Sever B

Scope            192.168.1.11     - 192.168.1.250               192.168.1.11 - 192.168.1.250
Exclusions     192.168.1.101   - 192.168.1.250               192.168.1.11  - 192.168.1.100
Reservations  192.168.1.1      - 192.168.1.10                 192.168.1.1   - 192.168.1.10

If you do it like this either machine will be able to issue valid IPs as required without them producing duplicate IPs. By setting the same reservations on both machines you make sure that those machines that require a reserved IP always bet the same IP reservation no matter which server issues the IP

I agree with the solutions mentioned above where you split the DHCP scopes on different servers. Another approach would be to configure the standby DHCP server as an exact replica of the current DHCP server. But do NOT autghorize the DHCP server with the AD and it would not hand over the IPs. In case your primary DHCP fails a simple Authorization from the GUI would bring the backup server in play.
